Purpose: Students must demonstrate their knowledge for planning a sound essay structure by creating a seven paragraph critical synthesis outline involving five topics thematically connected to science and/or technology. This assignment will benefit students when planning essays for academic audiences with expectations for effective logic and organization.

Task: Study and Apply the following resources to support your strategies for outlining your seven paragraph critical synthesis essay which is due soon. Upload a digital copy of the outline for instructor evaluation with feedback prior to drafting your critical synthesis essay.

Follow the directions in the SFSW on page 50-51 to develop sentence and bullet point outline incorporating all of the Science and Technology resources. I have provided a Critical Synthesis Outline Guide with the topics arranged in no particular order. So you must rearrange the topics using organizational suggestions for your main writing strategy: illustration, cause and effect or argument. Reinking and von der Osten provide context for the four staged Critical Synthesis process at the end of each main writing strategy chapter along with a planning flow chart. Follow the Directly Stated Thesis model in SFSW Chapter 5 on page 104 to plan your introduction paragraph in which you will define both terms using dictionary.com. Follow the Restatement of the Thesis model on page or the Hope or Recommendation model in SFSW Chapter 5.

Criteria for Success:

Download Professor Dosh's Critical Synthesis Outline Template. Organize (cut and paste) sub-topics based on least important to most important or vice versa. Logically, Earth must be your first or last topic discussion since the other topics were developed from the resources it provides. I have provided the thesis statements from each resource. You must add the signal (awesome) verb that characterize the author's view. Then, develop topic sentence for each topic. Provide bullet points for subordinate ideas.
