PURPOSE
The primary purpose of this assignment is to practice writing a classification paragraph. A secondary purpose is to practice setting effective goals that fit the S.M.A.R.T. acronym (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time Limited)
TASK
Requirements:
- Strong topic sentence giving the main idea
- One paragraph of 7-12 well-developed, correctly structured, grammatically correct sentences
- Effective transitions
- Must categorize (group) goals into different categories using a strong basis for classification such as time or quality-of-life areas
- MLA format with both outline and paragraph. Please use the supplied template.
Watch the following video: Set and Achieve Goals. Be sure that you understand the S.M.A.R.T requirements for an effective goal. If you don't understand, watch the video again or do some research on the Internet by Googling "Smart Goals."
Make a list or free write about your major goals and then group them together into different categories, classifying them according to a single basis. For example, you might classify them based on how long it will take you to meet the goals (short-term goals, mid-range goals, and long-term goals), or you might group them according to quality-of-life goals such as career goals, relationship goals, health goals, or educational goals. After you have determined the basis for classifying your goals, be sure your details about each goal relate to your basis of classification. Be careful to cover all goals and not let categories overlap.
Example topic sentence: I have several goals that can be classified based on the amount of time that I will need to complete them: short-term goals, mid-range goals, and long-term goals.
1. Short-term goals-take less than a month to achieve
a. Short-term goal 1
b. Short-term goal 2
2. Mid-range goals- will take between a month and a year to achieve
a. Mid-range goal 1
b. Mid-range goal 2
3. Long-term goals-these will take more than a year to achieve
a. Long-term goal 1
b. Long-term goal 2
