Question:
Purpose: This week you will use a technology program to obtain Binomial Probabilities
Post: This week you will use some form of technology, either Excel or a TI83/84 Plus to determine the probability of an event.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics in Vital Statistics of the US, there is roughly an 80% chance that a person of age 20 years will be alive at the age of 65. Suppose that 3 people of age 20 are selected at random. Find the probability that exactly 2 of them will still be alive at age 65. Use the steps below and the screenshots on page 247 in your e-text for help. When you are finished, post a picture of your work and leave a question for your classmates to answer. Your question should be the same percents and the same ages, but change the last question. (For instance: Suppose that 12 people of age 20 are selected at random. Find the probability that exactly 9 of them are still alive at 65.)
Steps for Excel:
- Click
- Select Statistical from the Or select a category drop down list box.
- Select BINOM>DIST from the Select a function list.
- Click OK
- Type 2 in the Number_s box
- Click in the Trials text box and type 3.
- Click in the Probability_s text box and type 0.8.
- Click in Cumulative text box and type FALSE.
Steps for TI-83/84 PLUS (If you don't have a calculator, you can use Excel)
- Pres 2nd>DIST
- Arrow down to binompdf (and press ENTER)
- Type 3,0,8,2 and press ENTER)
