Purpose: When asked if they view conflict as a positive or negative part of their lives, most people respond that they believe that conflict as a negative. Experts in the field of conflict management disagree, however, and believe that a negative view is learned through examples we see and are taught in childhood and through our personal experiences. Because most people see conflict as a bad thing, the approach they take when faced with it is the result of countless generations of avoidance (pretending like the problem doesn't exist) or competition (win at all costs), neither of which are usually the best method for resolving conflict productively. As we begin this journey toward a more positive approach to conflict management, it is helpful to consider how we came to view conflict as we do.
