PYTHON TURTLE HELP

For a HW assignment we had to map out a series of dots of where earthquakes have happened throughout the world by using file reading. We have that done, and the dots show up perfectly by using turtle graphics, however, our teacher has this gif image of a map of the world and she wants us to import it into our program so that it is the background of our turtle graphic. I dont know how to do that, so imagine the file is called world.gif and it is located on User/Mason/Desktop. How would we go about importing a gif as the background in our code???
