In the wake of controversies at Facebook $($from Cambridge Analytica to paying people to install a tracking app$),$ microphones in Google Nest products, creepy retargeting ads that pop up based on our search histories and even conversations, to cheap smart TVs that snoop on us and are subsidized by their makers selling our data to third parties. Citizens seemingly have no privacy whatsoever. $$Two years ago, Texas sued Meta because it has used facial recogniztion software on its citizens. More recently, Texas $($and many other states$)$ has banned TikTok from all state agencies and state$-$owned devices over similar privacy and security concerns, this time with China. Your task is to write a position paper regarding consumer privacy protection. Feel free to summon the words of President John F$.$ Kennedy regarding consumer rights, or anything else you deem relevant, including the reader for this semester. Consider the ethics of data collection and sale, whether simply opting$-$in is OK$,$ and balancing privacy and the corporate need for information.
