An asphaltic concrete base course mixture is being designed by the Marshall method. The aggregate combination in a trial mix contains $(11\%)$ coarse gravel, $(18\%)$ mid. gravel, $(25\%)$ fine gravel, $(40\%)$ normal sand, and $(6\%)$ lime; the specific gravities of gravel, sand, lime$,$ and bitumen are $2\mathrm{.}7,2\mathrm{.}72,2\mathrm{.}8,$ and $1\mathrm{.}03$ respectively. Results of tests on specimens prepared from this aggregate combination and various percentages of asphalt $($by weight of total mixture$)$ are as follows:
