Question: Q . 2 ( b ) To determine the consistency of a fine grained soil sample B , a cone penetration test was carried out

Q.2(b) To determine the consistency of a fine grained soil sample B, a cone penetration test was carried out with the following results:
Table Q.2(b): Cone penetrometer method test results for Sample B
\table[[Penetration (mm),W1,W2,W3],[15.5,12.01,17.30,16.07],[18.5,11.99,17.70,16.10],[20.5,11.94,18.89,16.74],[25.5,12.07,19.20,16.54]]
Please submit your answers with graph paper.
Notes: W1= Mass of container (g)
W2= Mass of container and wet soil (g)
W3= Mass of container and soil after over drying (g)
(i) Determine the liquid limit (LL) of the fine-grained portion of the soil sample by plotting the moisture content (%) against penetration (mm) based on Table Q.2(b).
(ii) If plastic limit for Sample B was found to be 10%, determine the plasticity index (?PI) value.
(iii) What is the soil description of Sample B from plasticity chart? (Assuming the % fines is 100%)
(iv) Determine which soil (Sample A or Sample B) is more suitable to be used as a fill material for the base of a pavement based on the information you have. Explain your answer.
(Hint: Soil with ability of absorbing large amounts of water would be unsuitable for the base of a pavement.)
