Q2: 7.5 marks Read the case study below. What ethics research advice do you have for Maria as a fellow cultural anthropologist? Make sure your answer considers the main principles of professional research ethics and their relevance - or lack of relevance - to the case study below. Case Study: Maria moved into Wonderland, an urban ghetto, to explore how residents in the neighbourhood survived in an income-insecure environment. Over the course of 6 months of ethnographic research, Maria began to feel that she was considered a member of the neighbourhood as she attended and helped organize different community events (e.g., dances, parties, and church functions); had established friendly relationships with several families; and, had many friendly conversations with folks at neighbourhood laundromats, clinics, recreation centres, and sporting events. Maria's research revealed that there were two survival strategies regularly used by the residents of Wonderland. The first strategy: Residents helped each other out with childcare needs, by sharing meals, and by exchanging clothing. The second strategy involved the sharing of luxury stolen goods that residents gifted to each other (e.g., designer clothing, expensive jewellery, and electronic goods like TVs, radios, etc). One night, a research participant, L., stopped by Maria's apartment for a coffee and a chat. After they had been talking for about two hours, L. went outside to her car and returned with a box of expensive, designer-brand clothing and a record player. Maria was honoured by L.'s gifts but insisted that she could not accept them as they were too costly. The research participant laughed and said, "Don't you worry, it's not out of my pocket," thereby letting Maria know that the items were stolen. L. then became more serious in her tone and demeanour, looked Maria directly in the eyes, and said: "Either you are one of us or you aren't. You can't have it both ways!"
