QUESTION 1 - 20 Marks - 1. On the 6 of December, 2021, the Commercial Drivers in Ghana went through with a strike 6 . , a action. In effect. all operators of private commercial vehicles joined this nationwide strike action leading to many passengers stranded at the various bus stops and lorry stations across the country, particularly in Accra. The strike action follows weeks of threats by the Coalition of Private Road Transport Commercial Operators Union (CPRTCOU) on the government to reduce fuel prices. The CPRTCOU consists of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). Association of Tipper Truck Drivers, Harbour Transport Owners, the Ghana National Cargo Transport Association, the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, the Concemed Drivers Association Digital Drivers. Commercial motorbike riders, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, among others. The coalition on November 9, 2021, threatened to embark on strike if government did not reduce fuel prices. At a press conference, the General Secretary of the GPRTU, Mr. Godfred Abulbire, . , , . said there had been an unending surge in the pump prices of petroleum products in Ghana in recent months. On the day they went through with the strike some Drivers like the Ashaiman Trotro station tumed their us stion into a football park as they played football amongst themselves. A . driver said the strike action cold last for a week and indicated that they want government to factor them in when taking a decision. Some of the striking drivers also indicated that, they want the goverment to allow them to increase their fares in order to make up for the fuet increases or reduce the fuel prices for them to continue to charge what they are currently charging passengers. The Association of Oil Marketing Companies have also indicated that, the increase in fuel prices is as a result of the market forces, that is demand and supply as realized on the international scene. One passenger who was interviewed by the media said that "Me. I don't understand what's going on this strike thing is something else. I have been here since bam. I managed to get on a car but they dropped me off because of some road blockades. I'm returning home" The Consumer Protection Agency have also expressed concerns about the increasing nature in which fuel prices continue to go up irrespective of the difficulties in the country. The trade Union Congress of Ghana have also indicated that such fuel price increment has dire consequences for its members and are demanding the government comes through with a better policy to ameliorate the living conditions of its members Assuming the strike by the commercial drivers is ongoing.
