The diagram below shows part of the first floor plan of a proposed mini factory. The top of the slab will be finished with a 40mm thick hard-wearing screed having a unit weight of 20kNm3. The perimeter beams will carry a brick wall that is 2.7m high and 140mm wide. The floor will be subjected to a live load of 5kNm2.
1.1 Design suitable reinforcement to resist the bending moments in the slab panel bound by columns 2,3,4 and 5 using 30MPa concrete and high tensile reinforcement. The cover to all reinforcement is to be 40mm.
1.2 Check the slab for shear at the internal support of the short span.
1.3 Determine the expected long-term service deflection and comment on your answer.
1.4 Indicate by means of a simple sketch (in plan) how these bars would be placed.
