Question: QUESTION 1 QUESTION 2 ( 6 0 ) You have been tasked to carry out a preliminarily drought and flow reliability assessment of the water

QUESTION 1QUESTION 2(60)
You have been tasked to carry out a preliminarily drought and flow reliability assessment of
the water resources system (in Orange drainage system), assumingly characterised by
annual total flow data (in Million cubic meters).
Choose the verified data for the Orange river system (drainage), symbolised by D, as per
nomenclature of DWS or Water Research Commission (WRC). Specifically, the flow gauge
on the Orange River, located in the sub-drainage namely D1 is used. The gauge no. where
the flow data have been measured is D1H003.
Carry out the following tasks:
2.1. Write down your unique for visiting DWS website (5)
2.2. Display the time series of streamflow data, between 2000-February and 2020-
October. (Show all screenshots of all steps to obtain the data. Your different
times on screenshots should be unique, hence different from any other student.
If found to be the same, your will be penalised with a ZERO.
2.3. Calculate the first drought threshold as third of maximum flow and the second
threshold as the midpoint between the maximum and the minimum flow.
(10)
2.4. Determine the annual flow reliability for the time series
2.5. Plot times series of streamflows and include the thresholds levels. Comment
on the plot obtained.
2.6. Determine the total deficits for the water resources based on the 2 thresholds.
(10)
2.7. Give an assessment of the water resources system based on the results of the
tasks you have performed.
(40)
1.1. Estimate the average annual daily demand design flow (ML/day) for a water supply
scheme servicing a new development area close to Boksburg, in Gauteng Province. The
following data have been used for the water services (on daily basis):
The area has an abattoir of 50 cattle heads and has 3 schools having each 300 learners and
operating between 8 h 00 and 14 h 00. There are 4 churches of 1000m2 each and 3 sports
grounds covering 4000m2 each. The community has a combined stand size area of 120 ha
and is assumed to be highly dense area. The inhabitants of the area will enjoy a wellness
center of 1000m2. Municipal offices will be on a site of 6000m2.
1.1. Calculate the corresponding peakflow (Megaliter/day)(30)
1.2. Based on design guidelines, approximate the real water loss from the water supply system
of the development.
(5)
1.3. Give a rational assessment of your results (5)
Note: For question 1.1 and 1.2, where applicable use strictly UPPER values in the bracket, as
per newly design guidelines developed by Department of Human Settlements of South
Africa strictly apply. Failure to adhere to new guidelines nullifies your answer.
