Figure 1 shows the layout of a 150 mm thick suspended reinforced concrete floor slab that will form
part of a public library building. The slab will be cast monolithically with 550mm300mm beams
supporting it. The slab supports a dead load of 1.2kNm2 for finishes.
All columns are 300mm300mm.
The characteristic strength of the materials used are:
Characteristic strength of concrete, fcu=30MPa
Yield strength of reinforcement steel, fy=450MPa.
The nominal cover to reinforcement is 25 mm .
1.1 Using the relevant Codes of practice to design suitable reinforcement for the interior
negative (hogging) moment of Beam ABCD.
1.2 Design the shear resistance of Beam ABCD.
1.3 Use software to solve this problem (you are required to be confined to the exact parameters of the
