Question 1: Two black men are arrested and escorted out of a Philadelphia Starbucks after staff called the police to report they refused to leave; the men hadnt ordered anything and were reportedly waiting for a business associate to arrive. The staff reportedly called 911 because Starbucks does not allow nonpaying people from the public to come in and use the restroom. The employees said the men were trespassing and had refused to leave the restaurant.
Very quickly, this incident hits the major news agencies and gets a lot of coverage. As CEO of the company you issue a statement: Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling. Regretfully, our practices and training led to a bad outcome the basis for the call to the Philadelphia Police Department was wrong. Our store manager never intended for these men to be arrested and this should never have escalated as it did.
After issuing the apology, you also feel that major change is needed within the company. How would you go about implementing the change? If you choose to apply the three-step change process developed by Kurt Lewin and what initiatives would you undertake under each step: Unfreezing, Change and Re-freezing that would help you achieve your goals of diversity, equity and inclusion?
