Question: Question 2 : 1 3 D 1 ( Wankat , 2 0 1 7 ) A feed of 1 0 0 . 0 k g

Question 2: 13D1(Wankat,2017)
A feed of 100.0kgmin of a 1.2wt% mixture of acetic acid in water is to be extracted with
1-butanol at 1atm pressure and 26.7C. We desire an outlet concentration of 0.1wt%
acetic acid in the exiting water. We have available solvent stream 1 that is 44.0kgmin of
pure 1-butanol and solvent stream 2 that is 30.0kgmin of 1-butanol that contains 0.4
wt% acetic acid. Determine if the following alternatives (to the example) are capable of
producing outlet water of desired acetic acid concentration.
a. Use only pure solvent at bottom of extractor.
b. Mix all of pure and all of impure solvent together and use at bottom of the column.
c. Mix all of pure and part of impure solvent together and use at bottom of column.
