Medium osmolarity is an important variable in the design of serum$-$free media for mammalian cell culture. A murine hybridoma cell line synthesizing IgG$1$ antibody is grown in culture media adjusted to three different osmolarities by addition of NaCl or sucrose. Growth and viability of the cells in batch culture are monitored over a period of $300$ hours. Results for viable cell concentration as a function of culture time are as follows.
