Question 2
Read the case study and answer the questions.
Phumeza
Phumeza was employed as a marketing and sales representative at a wholesale office furniture, equipment, and stationary distributor. Her job entailed marketing and selling the companys products at retail outlets in the Eastern Cape.
At first, Phumeza was very excited about the job. She had a diploma in marketing, loved travelling, and she wanted to be successful. When she accepted the job, she was very clear about what she wanted to achieve in life. She was going to work hard, establish herself as an excellent salesperson, gain as much experience as possible, and then apply for the job of regional sales manager. She would then give herself three years in this job, before she would become a national sales manager. It all looked so easy.
Now two years have passed and Phumeza is disillusioned with her job. As far as she is concerned, the sales targets are set too high. She must rush from outlet to outlet to make the necessary sales. The downturn in the economy does not help the situation. She is physically and emotionally exhausted from being on the road all the time. She resents customers who waste her time by studying the product catalogue in detail, asking too many questions, and then order a minimal number of things. She also resents the other salespeople who meet their targets with apparent ease. Because Phumeza is away often, she misses the interaction and support that colleagues normally enjoy in a fixed-business environment. To comfort herself, she lives on fast food. Because of her unhealthy diet, Phumeza has gained ten kilograms in three months.
Phumeza feels that her manager does not understand how strenuous her job is and does not appreciate the efforts that she puts into her job. She feels useless. Her dream of becoming the regional sales manager is fading. Now, she focuses on earning just enough money to pay her rent and survive and is less focused on the future. She feels depressed.
