drained frictionless medium dense sand with the following properties:
Density, 18kNm3
Angle of internal friction, =30
Safe bearing pressure Pmax =200kPa
The characteristic strengths of the materials in the retaining walls are:
Characteristic strength of concrete, fcu=25MPa
Yield strength of reinforcement steel, fy=450MPa.
Using SANS 0160 and SANS 0100, perform the following calculations:
2.1 Check the stability of the retaining wall and determine whether the stresses developing
below the base are acceptable.
2.2 Design suitable reinforcement for the retaining wall.
2.3 Use relevant design software to solve this problem (meaning design an optimal retaining
wall that can be used, not necessarily the one given on Figure 2. The parameters on the
question remain).
