Question 3: Answer all parts * { Thy to fund answers else where for now } Consider the task of synchronously producing ice-cream cones, as illustrated in Figure Q3, by implementing a shift register function. - Cones are placed into carriers and proceed to an indexing conveyor which is sized to accomodate eight carriers/cones, from position 0 to position 7. - A rotary encoder automatically generates a pulse on input (X0) every time the conveyor indexes. The conveyor motor and gearbox arrangement produces this indexing motion and is mechanically timed to occurs every 5 seconds. - Good/Faulty cone detection is indicated by means of a sensor (X1) at position 0 on the conveyor. [Good cone X1 ON, Faultyot present cone X1 OFF] - Good cones receive ice cream (position 3) by activating (Y0), syrup (position 5) by activating ( Y1 ) and nuts (position 7 ) by activating (Y2). The three dispensing machines are internally timed and controlled to take place within the allocated time. - The process is started by pressing the start switch (X3) and can be stopped at any time by pressing the stop switch (X4). - The cones are processed in batches and the process is to automatically stop once 1,000 good cones have been processed for machine cleaning. In this instance pressing the stop switch (X4) will reset the count and clear the shift register. (a) What do you understand by the term 'shift register' commonly employed in PLC programs? (5 marks) (b) Implement a ladder logic PLC program for the problem, using a shift register function (see Appendix A). Explain your solution. (25 marks)
