A transport system is being planned that uses a vertical water jet fed by a large 10 m high water reservoir. The vertical jet is required to suspend a block weighing 4.0 N for a period of time before the block is removed. A schematic with dimensions is shown in Fig. 2. As part of the preliminary design it is necessary to estimate the water jet diameter in order to size the piping from the reservoir. In solving this:
a) Determine the water velocity at the nozzle exit.
b) Determine the water velocity just before hitting the suspended block.
c) Determine the required diameter of the nozzle.
Note that the water once hitting the surface supporting the block flows horizontally away at approximately the same velocity. Assume the density of water is 1000kgm3 and gravity is 9.81ms2.
