Question One

A student in UoN conducted a study in which he wanted to establish therelationship between "University Policies and Job Satisfaction Among Academic and none Academic Staff in University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya". Based on this study;

1. What do you think is the major problem of this researcher? Please specify the problem and its specific indicators.
2. State the key elements this research should consider in stating the purposes of the study
3. State the specific objectives this researcher should consider in this study.
4. In managing his research project, this researcher should go through the five systematic phases of any scientific research. Clearly explain these phases to this researcher.

Question Two

1. The research student in question One is required to identify at least one theory on which his study will be based. Explain why there is need for such a theory.
2. This researcher has cited two theories and wants to select one that will be underpinned in his study. The said two theories are; 1)Herzberg's theory by Frederick Herzberg (1950s). This theory is based on two factors; i) what makes employees satisfied; and ii) dissatisfied on the job. Herzberg asserted that there are two dimensions to job satisfaction: motivation and "hygiene". Hygiene issuesdo not motivate employees but minimize dissatisfaction, if handled properly. Hygiene are factors related to job environment e.g. company policies, supervision, salary, interpersonal relations and working conditions. Motivators create satisfaction and include achievement, recognition, work itself, responsibility and advancement. 2) The second theory isthe theory of achievement motivation, by Atkinson (1964), which postulates that several internal and external factors affect the strength of motivation to achieve, which is theorized to vary from individual to individual. As a masters' student help this researcher select one most relevant theory out of the two and comprehensively explain why it is the most applicable.
3. "Without a clear identification of research gap(s), there is no need for research". Explain this statement in relation to any research project.
4. Briefly explain the process any researcher goes through in trying to identify research gaps
5. Explain the types of gaps that a researcher may identify in this endeavor.

Question Three

1. Considering the research study in question one, what will be the target population for this researcher and why?
2. If the population in this study involves 1140 staff, apply the Slovene's formula Or Morgan and Krejice (1970) table to compute the minimum required sample size for this study.
3. The above researcher has known that the population involves 900 academic and 240 none academic staff. Help this researcher get proportionate samples from the sample size you computed in question three b) above.
4. The above researcher has decided to employ purposive and simple random sampling to select the above stated sample sizes. Clearly explain why (when) these two are applicable in this particular study and how this researcher will apply the two.
5. How can you advise this researcher to ensure validity and reliability of the data collection research instrument?
