Baldeep is a year employee with the College. They work as a frontline staff member in an academic unit and have frequent contact with students. Recently, a student in the Faculty in which Baldeep works was advised by the College that they no longer held status as a student. The student has an opportunity to appeal that decision however the appeal will not be heard for at least two weeks. As a result, the students behavior has been agitated and intimidating, however they have not exhibited any aggression towards Baldeep or their coworkers in the office.
There was one incident involving the students attendance at a class, in which they were no longer registered, where their disruptive behavior resulted in them being escorted out of the building.
Baldeep has indicated to their manager that they are afraid of this student and afraid that they will express anger towards the office staff.
Baldeep has left work and is refusing to return until they are assured that the student will not be allowed on campus.
Baldeeps manager has worked with Campus Security Services to determine if there is a risk to any of the staff. A meeting was held with Baldeep, their union health and safety representative, manager, the Assistant Director of Campus Security and the Human Resources Consultant. At the meeting, the AD Campus Security assured Baldeep that this student posed no risk to any staff at the University, and offered for one of the campus Personal Safety Coordinators to meet with Baldeep to review personal safety protocols. In addition, they advised the group that the University is a public space. Baldeep advised the parties at the meeting that they were threatened by a student years ago. Baldeep also disclosed to their manager that they were experiencing some issues in their personal life that they need to attend to Baldeep continues to remain off work and has advised their manager that they will not return until the student is banned from campus.
