Luke Essay Proposal

The passage from Luke chosen is about the healing of a man who was paralyzed. The most important question about this passage is whether Jesus really healed the man or if the man just changed his mind. "The Gospel According to Luke" by Joseph A. Fitzmyer and "Luke" by Darrell L. Bock are the two scholarly articles that will help answer this question.

In his article, Fitzmyer explains what the passage in Luke means by looking at its historical setting. He says that the passage was probably written during a time when Christians were being persecuted and that the author was trying to show that Jesus was a powerful person who could help those who were suffering. Bock's article also looks at the historical background of the passage, but he argues that the author was trying to show that Jesus was a caring person who cared about those who were suffering[1].

Both articles give helpful interpretations of the passage, but neither one directly answers the question of whether or not Jesus really healed the man. But both articles do give some evidence that could be used to support either side of the argument. Fitzmyer, for example, points out that Luke was written during a time of persecution, which could be seen as a sign that Jesus was a powerful person who could help people who were going through hard times.
