$($b$)$ In order to check the adjustment of a tilting level, the following procedure was followed. Pegs A$,$ B$,$ C$,$ and D were set up to lie on a straight line such that $AB=BC=CD=30m.$ The level was set up at $B$ and readings taken to a staff held at A and then at $C.$ The level was shifted to $D$ and readings taken to staff held at A and $C.$ The readings are in table $3\mathrm{.}1$ below. Determine whether or not the instrument is in adjustment and, if not, explain how the instrument can be corrected.
