Overview

This discussion will require students to post an example of data that illustrates the empirical rule.

"In most data sets, a large portion of the values tend to cluster somewhere near the mean...In symmetrical data sets, where the median and mean are the same, the values often tend to cluster around the median and mean, producing a bell-shaped normal distribution... The empirical rule states that for population data that form a normal distribution (bold itallcs added), the following are true:

  • Approximately 68% of the values are within 1 standard deviation from the mean.
  • Approximately 95% of the values are within 2 standard deviations from the mean.
  • Approximately 99.7% of the values are within 3 standard deviations from the mean.

The empirical rule helps you examine variability in a (normal) population..." (p. 122)

Instructions

Students will describe an example (your example) using an assumed mean and an assumed standard deviation to illustrate the ranges of their normal distribution.

Please post one original post in the discussion. After you've posted your original post, you are also required to post at least one substantive response to a peer's post.

It's to your advantage to post early in the discussion window as media articles can only be used once. The student posting a media article that has already been used will earn a maximum of half the points for the discussion. Note that media need not be used for this discussion but you may.

You are also highly encouraged to read your peer's posts before you post, to ensure that articles aren't being used twice and that your post is on the right track. If you use a news article, please include the link.
