You are a new fire officer and just met the department's newest member. Your chief has decided to have you create a professional development plan for her. This plan will cover her first year on the job, the probationary period. How will you set her up for success? Her professional development is in addition to the standard training plan that applies to all firefighters. What techniques would you employ to help her succeed and stay on track? Your textbook has an entire chapter on professional development.

Training is more than just having firefighters practice putting water on fires. Good trainers should understand the taxonomy of educational principles, curriculum development, test item construction, distance education, certification systems, career development, and training safety. They should also be able to provide unbiased feedback. Sometimes instructors are lower ranking than the fire officers they teach. Arguably, the success of fire service training lies with the instructor.

Instructors should be qualified and have good qualities such as motivation, enthusiasm, competence, desire to teach, ingenuity or creativity, and empathy.

if you are, discuss your department's training plan. Do you have access to it? Does it cover mandatory training courses as determined by the code you use? Are the goals of your training plan achievable? What would you do differently if you could make changes to your training plan? Lastly, how does your training plan impact personnel management? Does it help or hinder?

If you are not part of a fire department or response unit, you may choose another department to discuss.

For this activity, you will create an Annual Training Plan presentation.Does your training plan differentiate between the various ranks? For example, does your fire chief really need to learn about tying knots or would other courses such as incident command be more appropriate for them? Think about this when creating your plan.
