Dynamic Addressing for IPv$6$ GUAs

Most devices obtain their IPv$6$ GUAs dynamically using Router Advertisement $($RA$)$ and Router Solicitation $($RS$)$ messages.

RS and RA Messages

For the GUA, a device obtains the address dynamically through Internet Control Message Protocol version $6($ICMPv$6)$ messages. IPv$6$ routers send out ICMPv$6$ RA messages every $200$ seconds to all IPv$6-$enabled devices on the network. An RA message is also sent in response to a host sending an ICMPv$6$ RS message. Both messages are shown in Figure $12-5.$
