Raift is a well-known giant construction company in Asia, where the Japanese parent company is located. Over the past 28 years, they have successfully expanded their building construction business into the Southeast Asian region and Orlia. In the last four (04) years, they have expanded their business to Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka. The company operates in a variety of business modes, including wholly owned subsidiaries, joint ventures, small partners and technical consultants and sponsors. In Sri Lanka, it operates as a wholly owned subsidiary wholly owned by the parent company.

Raift currently operates three condominium projects in Sri Lanka. One of them is Galleface.
The other two projects are being implemented in Colombo 05 and 07. Two such projects are currently in the blueprint stage and one of them has already been allocated land in Negombo for one project and discussions are underway to obtain another land in Nuwara Eliya.

The company has a large workforce as the construction industry is highly manpower consuming. On average, about 70% of people are recruited mainly from nearby villages and towns and are paid on a day-to-day basis. However, the remaining 30 employees will be recruited from the Eastern, Uva and Sabaragamuwa Provinces to provide accommodation and transport facilities. Employees who work at a supervisory level sometimes make transfers from one place to another depending on the job requirements. At the supervisory level you have civil and technical engineers, workplace managers who control finance and inventory. The administrative and human resources duties are carried out under the Finance Division while the Finance Division of the Company operates from Colombo.

Source and retention of labor, conflicts between groups of workers, etc. can be seen as significant challenges. Failure to report for duty is another major topic of concern. Many projects are significantly delayed due to these problems. Therefore, there are instances of loss as a source.

In recent times, work on two (2) workplaces has come to a standstill due to payment, facilities and working hours. Although the engineers had intervened and provided some solutions through negotiations, the problems were not completely resolved.

It is also unfortunate that the retention rate of engineers is 22% higher than the field. The mutual understanding between management and employees is at an unfavorable level. It is clear that instability has arisen in facilitating the completion of the work and in the functioning of the voice.

Conflicts between employees during working hours as well as non-working hours have been reported based on facility inequality and wages. These issues have grown from heated debates to conflicts. 04 major clashes with police
Complaints have been received regarding. There are some cases pending in this regard and some cases are organized by the plaintiff. These issues are a nuisance to many employees at all levels as they disrupt their work environment and income. One of the factors influencing the high charge of engineers, management says, is the opportunity to engage them in pay, professional dignity and management decision making. It is clear that the issues that have not been deeply understood and discussed are institutional structure-centric decision-making, poor communication and a shortage of labor force professional management. Due to all these factors, the necessary background has been set for the formation of a trade union representing all sections of the workforce.

As the construction industry grows, many contracts are awarded through competitive bidding. Many factors are taken into consideration in the competitive bidding process and the timely completion of the work and its quality are studied. While foreign construction businesses operate in Sri Lanka, opportunities for Chinese construction companies have become a challenge to other competitors in the industry. They can also import labor for the projects they manage from India and China.

In a world where the world is gradually recovering from an epidemic, the outflow of labor is rapidly receding and life is slowly returning to its normal state. This global and local situation presents enormous challenges to any labor-intensive sector. Another challenge in this field is the difficulty and high cost of retaining labor.
