Rationale: Understanding different types of voting is an important skill to know when it comes time to vote. It is also good to know each type of voting mechanism in order to know which would be the best to use based on any given situation. Furthermore, knowledge of voting approaches is useful to ensure that voting results are obtained as honestly as possible.

Instructions: In this project, you will have the opportunity to apply different voting approaches to determine a winner.

Suppose that Disneyland has a permanent population of 55 characters. (Were talking about characters such as Chip and Dale, Pocahontas, Cinderella, Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, etc.) Also suppose that these inhabitants want to elect a mayor from among their population. Five candidates run for mayor: Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Cinderella, and Rapunzel. In order to make calculations a bit easier on ourselves, lets use the first letter of each individual to symbolize which one is which. So,

Mickey = M

Donald = D

Goofy = G

Cinderella = C

Rapunzel = R

Each ballot asks the voter to rank these candidates in order of preference. Suppose the results come out at shown by the preference schedule shown below:

First M D G C R R
Second C R D G D G
Third R C R R C C
Fourth G G C D G D
Fifth D M M M M M
Voters 18 12 10 9 4 2

Your goal is to find the winner using the following methods:

  • Majority Rule
  • Plurality
  • Ranked Choice
  • Borda Count
  • Pairwise Comparison

You must show your work for each method in order to get full points. Also, use complete sentences and paragraphs as you prepare your assignment for submittal. Do not just submit calculations. (Feel free to include how much you love Donald Duck in your narrative! I won't give you extra credit if you do, but Donald does deserve more respect than Disney gives him!)

Finally, on a scale from 1-10 (1 = poor rating, 10 = excellent rating), rate how much you feel that other team members contributed to this project. Explain your reasons as to why you gave each team member the score that you gave them. Also, on a scale from 1-5 (1 = you are a softie, 5 = you are a hard rater), rate yourself on how hard you rated your teammates. Finally, rate yourself on how much you felt that you contributed to this project.

Submission:

You may work as a group on this project, but everyone needs to make sure to submit their own, even if it is the same for the entire group. You can submit as a Word document, a pdf, or you can take a picture of your work done on a piece of paper. But please, DO NOT submit using "Pages". I cannot open the file if you do.
