Ray agrees to collect jumble for the local church in order to gain access to neighbourhood premises.
Question:
Ray agrees to collect jumble for the local church in order to gain access to neighbourhood premises. He uses the opportunity to assess house contents which would be worth stealing.
On one occasion, he knocks at Granny's door. She invites him in for a cup of tea whilst she sorts out her jumble. Whilst she is out of the room, Ray rifles through the contents of her living room. Unable to get access to the contents of the desk drawer, he uses a letter opener from the desk to force open the lock. Finding nothing worth stealing, he looks around and spots a valuable Chinese vase on Granny's table.
When Granny returns, he offers to buy the vase and Granny, who has never liked the thing, agrees to sell it to him. Ray 'pays' Granny with a cheque which he has stolen from a previous house. At that moment, Nurse, Granny's district health visitor arrives and asks Ray what he is doing there. Fearing discovery, Ray brandishes the letter opener at her, pushes her out of the way and runs off down the road.
What advise should be given to Ray on his criminal liability, if any.Explain
