The business problem

Lucas manages a local art shop in Victoria. Artists can bring their artwork, such as

paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and handcrafted jewelry, to the shop for sale. Lucas

wants to develop a database to keep track of artists and the artworks they consign.

Each time an artist brings in their items, Lucas uses the stored data to generate a

receipt for them. Occasionally, Lucas has to arrange a pick$-$up service for artists when

they cannot deliver the items in person. It's important for him to record how the

artwork was received, whether through pick$-$up or in$-$store delivery. A sample receipt for

items is provided below.

The estimated age, price, and current market value of each piece of artwork vary

depending on the item. Some artworks can be sold individually or as part of a collection

or set. For example, a painting can be sold by itself or as part of a set of works by the

same artist, such as a jewelry set that contains a necklace and earrings. Lucas wants to

track which artworks are individual items and which are part of another artwork $($or set$),$

creating a hierarchical structure between artworks.

Artworks are categorized into types such as "paintings," "sculptures," "ceramics,"

"jewelry," etc. Each item is assigned to one category. Lucas also wants to track the

target stocking level for each category $($e$.$g$.,$ he aims to have $50$ paintings in stock$)$ and

the actual quantity of items on hand in each category.
