Read and study all the references given and analyse the marketing strategies employed by Disney.

Walt Disney

Many developed countries are grappling with the issue of childhood obesity. One area where this health epidemic is being attacked is the advertising of junk foods to children. In late 2016, the United Kingdom banned advertising of food high in fat, salt, and sugar to anyone under the age of 16. This included all types of media, including print, cinema, and online. In June 2017, Health Canada launched a public consultation process that looks to accomplish what the United Kingdom had done the year before.

However, it was not governments that led the charge toward sweeping bans. For a look at how this movement really began, we need to look back to the creators of Steamboat Williethe Walt Disney Company. The Walt Disney Company announced in 2012 it was implementing firm advertising rules on its television channels, radio stations, and its websites. Disney banned all ads for junk food on its media networks by 2015. Its hope was to get kids to eat better by removing the temptation of junk food advertising. The new rules made Disney a pioneer in recognizing the force of advertising on consumer behaviour.

Products such as Kraft's Capri Sun and Oscar Meyer Lunchables were deemed to not meet Disney's nutrition standards. Capri Sun had too much sugar, and Lunchables had high sodium content. Cereal with more than 10 grams of sugar or a meal with more than 600 calories did not meet nutrition standards and were not advertised during various Disney programming. Disney was a trend setter in the realm of children's health and sent a clear message that if companies wanted to connect with its brand, they would have to do so in a much healthier way.
