Read, evaluate and compose a substantial in-depth response (minimum 150 words) :

Litigation is the process for handling civil disputes between two parties in the court system. This process can include investigation, trials, settlements and appeals. Not all litigation will end up in court as parties can choose to settle before trial. The party who files the civil action is called the plaintiff, and the party being sued is called the defendant. The plaintiff starts the litigation by sending a summons or a complaint to the defendant. The defendant can then respond with counterclaims. At this point if no settlement is reached then the discovery phase of litigation will start. If after this process the parties still do not reach a settlement then the litigation will go to trial court. In trial court, the decision made by the judge is final and has to be accepted by both parties.

The court case I have chosen is SC19-552, Scott J. Israel v. Ron DeSantis. This case really shows how litigation can go back and forth and end up wasting both parties time and money, or in this case, taxpayer's money. Israel was the Sheriff of Broward County and during his last term there were two major shootings, one at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport in Broward County and the other at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.vGovernor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-14, suspending Israel from office. The executive order says that certain actions by Israel "constitute neglect of duty and incompetence," and states that two separate reports "specifically found that Sheriff Israel has not and does not provide frequent training for his deputies."

I believe this case does have ethical merit because of the severity of the issues that it deals with. If someone is not doing their job properly knowing that it could cause people to be hurt or even die, that is unethical and the person should be relieved of their duties.
