READ explanation below and view Lecture Week 7 BEFORE POSTING:
Weeks 8-14, you focus onONE TOPIC, for which you will developTHREE different types of writing projects:
- Project 5: Annotated Bibliography for Feasibility Report (Weeks 8-9)
- Project 6: Feasibility Report (Weeks 10, 11, 12, and 13)
- Project 7: PowerPoint Presentation with audio of Feasibility Report (Weeks 13-14)
Hence, it's important you choose topic wisely; otherwise you will spend eight weeks either bored or overwhelmed.
- To help you choose the right topic, we begin thewriting processhere in Discussions Week 7 by asking you to BRAINSTORM a topic idea and propose it here as a "working thesis" statement for peers (and me!) to evaluate.
- NOTE: Do NOTbegin researching or writing the Feasibility Report because I will evaluate your topics before you begin work Week 8!
WHY ASK FOR YOUR PROPOSED TOPIC NOW IF YOU'RE NOT WRITING THE REPORT NOW?
BECAUSE:
- In professional life, we may be asked to propose projects; so this exercise practices this skill - including responding to proposals or critiques.
- Topic proposals allow me to catch issues before students begin writing.
- Sharing ideas is how we learn.
NOW THAT YOU READ THE ABOVE, FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL FOR PEER (AND MY) REVIEW:
POST #1 (due THURSDAY, WEEK 7, 11:59pm EST):
- ReadProject 6: Feasibility Report assignment descriptionProposal must:
- Briefly describe a business-relatedproblem at a real company/businessthat you must name. (No social, economic, political issues because they are too big for this type of writing. Also not allowed: all topics used as examples here and elsewhere in the course.).[1-2 sentences; example: "ChatGPT is a new company offering AI services; however, many people don't trust AI because the technology tends to lie when it doesn't know the answer."]
- Briefly explain asolutionto this business-related problem you think would resolve the problem.[1-2 sentences; example: "ChatGPT should get AI to tell users when it's lying to them."]
- Explain at leasttwo criteriaby which your Feasibility Report will "test" out your solution(typical criteria are: Costs; Time; People - but there are many more!) [1-2 sentences; example: "The two criteria by which my Feasibility Report will test my proposed solution are costs and man-hours."]
- Conclude with a 1-to-3 sentence"working thesis" statementthat includes PURPOSE, AUDIENCE, PROBLEM, SOLUTION, AND CRITERIA USED TO ANALYZE FEASIBILITY OF SOLUTION. [Example: "ChatGPT is an AI company that has the potential of reaching millions of users allowing them to use the fantastic power of AI. However, AI is prone to lying - called "hallucinations" - so users don't trust it. In order to increase user trust, ChatGPT's engineers should focus on how to get AI to admit to users when it is making up information. The purpose of this Feasibility Report is to evaluate this solution for the benefit of ChatGPT's Board of Directors to consider. The report will evaluate the solution based on two criteria important to the company: costs and man-hours needed."] (TIP: Week 5 has information on building "thesis". "Working thesis" means you may change it - so don't think it has to be perfect!)
