She was put in charge Xerox's Business Group Operations becoming the first black woman to hold such a position in Xerox. Under her leadership the Business Group Operations brought in 80% of Xerox's profits. While Mulcahy criss-crossed the country reassuring employees and shareholders and refining a plan to save the company, Burns began implementing the plan and streamlining the company. Because of Mulcahy's and Burn's leadership, Xerox became profitable and more efficient. In 2009, Ursula Burns succeeded Anne Mulcahy as the CEO of Xerox. Burns was a former resident of low-income housing in Lower Manhattan and her hard working single mother made sure Burns received a good education. Burns was once a Xerox intern who ultimately became the first African-American woman CEO to lead a Fortune 500 company. Under her leadership Xerox changed from a photocopy machine producer to a business services provider. Xerox began diversifying its core business processes ultimately acquiring services and outsourcing company Affiliated Computer Services for USD6.4 billion. The purchase turned Xerox into a business services provider. It also doubled their number of employees and spread that workforce across 160 countries. Burns said that, "Transformation is about what you do and that's easy, generally. But how you do it is the hard part. It comes first and foremost from the top down. I have invested in this company. I've been here for 35 years. This is the long run. But if we have a leadership team where half of the people are there for the short term, it's not very good."
