About the company
India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established in 1956 as an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament. AIIMS was built to serve as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspects of healthcare and medical education in India. AIIMS has brought together educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity. In the field of education, AIIMS has helped attain self-sufficiency in post-graduate medical education. The Institute has comprehensive facilities for teaching, research and patient-care. As provided in the Act, AIIMS conducts teaching programs in medical and para-medical courses, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and awards its own degrees. Teaching and research are conducted in 42 disciplines. In the field of medical research AIIMS leads, generating more than 600 research publications by its faculty and researchers in a year. Twenty-five clinical departments including four super specialty centers manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre- and para-clinical departments.
Needs & Challenges
One of the main objectives behind AIIMS investiture is to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of medical education in India. In that regard, the institute wanted to develop a course designed to help resident surgeons understand the processes involved in the Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgical procedure. The institute trains its resident surgeons on various surgical procedures in real and actual operating environments. While this is the most practical and widely adopted training process, it poses adverse threats when considered for complex surgical procedures like Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting. The institute wanted to adopt an alternative training method that could deliver the training in a risk-free and yet experiential manner.
