Why was the Garden Bridge project scrapped? What is the Garden Bridge? The Garden Bridge was a proposed pedestrian bridge over the River Thames that would effectively be al park stretching over the river. More than 270 trees and 2,000 shrubs and climbing plants were expected to be planted on it. The 200m (-R3.4 billion) bridge would have had five distinct landscape areas and use more than 22,000 perennials, ferns and grasses and 64,000 bulbs. From wild marshlands on the South Bank, it would have phased into ornamental gardens on the north side of the Thames. Where in London would the Garden Bridge have been? The bridge would have linked to central London hubs, stretching from the South Bank to Temple tube station. It would have been between Waterloo Bridge (200m away) and Blackfriars Bridge (300m). Why has the Garden Bridge been scrapped? Sadiq Khan's decision to scrap the project follows a damning report that recommended ditching the proposed Thames crossing. Dame Margaret Hodge's review found it was difficult to justify further public investment" in the bridge. Mr Khan said: "Under the previous mayor, a considerable amount of London taxpayers' money has already been spent on the Garden Bridge. "I have always been clear that not a penny more of taxpayers' money should be allocated to the project. "Having assessed all the information available to me including the findings of Dame Margaret Hodge's independent review, my view is that providing Mayoral guarantees will expose the London taxpayer to too much additional financial risk. "I am simply not prepared to risk a situation where the taxpayer has to step in and contribute significant additional amounts to ensure the project is completed." How much has the project cost to date? The Garden Bridge Trust needed to raise an estimated 200m (-R3.4 Billion) to complete the project - but there is a shortfall of 70m (-1.2 Billion). So far 37.4m (-R600 Million) of public money was spent on planning for the bridge and this money will effectively have been lost. A further 9m (-R150 Million) is at risk The Garden Bridge was finally abandoned in August 2017 because of a shortfall in private funds, issues with securing rights to land and problems obtaining final planning consent, despite three years of talks with the relevant parties. Alex Williams, director of city planning at Transport for London (TFL), said the organisation had worked to ensure that the cost to the public sector has been kept to a minimum. He added: We have now confirmed the final payment legally required under the terms of the underwriting agreement made by the government. This formally ends our involvement with the project." Caroline Pidgeon, chair of the London Assembly's transport committee, called for a Charity Commission investigation into the trust, which she accused of squandering public money.
