When Tim Cook, the Apple CEO addressed his sexuality he acknowledged it as an advantage. He simultaneously recognised the company's previous focus was largely aimed at investors and consumers. Cook said "you obviously put a ton of energy behind diversity the same way you would put a ton of energy behind anything else that is truly important" when referencing the importance of a multicultural workforce. Women and minority groups were introduced to executive teams, advertisements of products involved a broader range of nationalities. The company also began publishing a diversity report in which it not only provided a breakdown of ethnicity as it pertains to the workforce but aims to improve yearly on issues such as payment disparities and promotional opportunities. An example of this was the data analysed in 2017, where of the 32% of female employees, the large majority work within the Apple retail stores with few actually behind technology development. Outside parties have also taken a stand in the direction of inclusivity. Rev Jesse Jackson confronted Cook in 2014 regarding the lack of diversity and payment schemes after which he "applauded [Apple's] efforts to connect with engineers of colour through partnerships with historically black colleges and universities and scholarship organizations." Apple also openly showcases its diversity matrix on its online website, and not just the current figures but showing the consistent improvement across serval years, including various employee testimonies.
