Case study 1 (questions 1-5)
Marcel is a 23-year-old man with alcohol and drug dependency. He has been unemployed for several years and is homeless. He sleeps on the streets and occasionally checks into a crisis accommodation service, or, if he has money, into a boarding house. Marcel has committed several offences associated with his addiction and has served two custodial sentences. He is currently on a personal bond awaiting trial for a charge of aggravated assault. Marcel reports that both his parents were alcoholics and that he experienced physical, sexual and emotional abuse during his childhood. His father died of liver disease at age 37. His mother is still alive, but he has had no contact with her since his father kicked him out of home when he was 14 because he thought he was gay. Marcel has not attended school since then. He has one older sister he sees occasionally, and says that their relationship is 'fair'. Marcel is not involved in a steady relationship at present. He has a network of friends within the gay community and stays with them sometimes. When he first left home, Marcel survived by becoming involved in short relationships with older men, some of whom were abusive and violent towards him. He has had numerous sexual partners, both men and women, over the past nine years. He has traded sex for drugs and money, has had sex under the influence of alcohol and drugs, and has occasionally been made to have sex against his will. Marcel identifies himself as bisexual. He first used alcohol at age 14 and began using other drugs, including inhalants, marijuana and amphetamines, by the age of 16. The family live in a three-bedroom house in a working class suburb. Her father worked as a labourer and her mother as a part-time cleaner. Su Lin's first language is Vietnamese. She left school at 15 to help her mother take care of her grandmother at home. Her grandmother died when Su Lin was 22.
