Jenin governorate waschosen to be the place for the main campus of AAUP since thenorthern part of the

West Bank

was missing a highereducational institution and especially because Jenin is locatednear the Arab cities and villages of the green line territories.And so$,$ Arab American University was opened on September$28,2000$ with a capital of $$12$ million USD, with few studentsand one building that contained four faculties: the Faculty ofDentistry, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of AlliedMedical Sciences, and the Faculty of Administrative andFinancial Sciences.

The academic programmes in AAUP started undercollaboration with

California State University $($CSU$)$

inStanislaus, which helped with the curriculum, and

Utah StateUniversity $($USU$)$

in Logan, which provided faculty membersand staff during the first years. In $2017,$ AAUP opened thesecond campus in Ramallah and AlBireh governorate. Andcurrently, AAUP provides over $40$ programmes in BA$,$ highdiploma, MA$,$ and PhD degrees.

AAUP adopted adeveloped management and quality control system todetermine the fields that need to be focused on inorder to improve the faculty members performance,improve English language for both faculty membersand students to reach proficiency in it$,$ expand inusing information technology in teaching andlearning, establish a capacity building unit, establisha monitoring and directing system to monitorstudents, and the continuous follow up for graduatesthrough the alumni club.

$($Scientific Research$)$:

AAUP encourages thescientific research field and encourages students toparticipate in it$,$ focuses on the internal support forresearch projects to encourage the scientific researchculture, enhances the collaboration relations with thenational, regional and international universities,searches for external fund resources, works onexpanding the graduate studies programs, activatesthe scientific sabbatical leaves for faculty staff, workson keeping the teaching burden according tointernational standards, provides financial incentivesfor researchers who gained an external fund,encourages participation in international conferencesand supports faculty members$$ mobility between localuniversities.

$($Sustainability and Financial Independence$)$:

AAUP implements a real budget system. The surplusis used to bring in efficient faculty members and tostart developmental and infrastructure projects. In orderto achieve its sustainability and financial independence,AAUP seeks to increase number of students byexpanding horizontally by $($increasing the number of newprograms$),$ and vertically by its $($graduate studiesprograms$),$ to establish new centers aiming to increaseincome, such as: Consultants centers, specializedclinics, entertainment facilities, AAUP hospital anddormitories.

$($Local Community$)$:

AAUP cares to build partnershiprelations with civil society institutions through providingcontinuous education and training, and throughcollaborating with the industrial and commercial sectors$.$AAUP seeks to enhance relations with the community through the office of the VicePresident for Community Affairs and the Public and International Relations Department, todetermine the cooperation aspects and the possible ways to expand and improve itsservices to the community. AAUP also works on restructuring and developing activities thatrequire community services, on improving the consultant centers and also works onencouraging the establishing of Arab American University Friends Association.
