Many research studies indicate that the some of the characteristics used to describe individuals are also sometimes applicable to describe the teams. It is found that how some teams also behave in the same manner as individuals behave. This is more seen in case of a trait like openness. This trait is used for both for individuals and teams also. Similarly, in organizations, some individuals are termed as smart and active individuals and some others are termed as dull and inactive. This characteristic describes the whole team instead of a single individual. It is often found that teams with very high positive culture, mutual trust, positive norms and synergy are found to make quick decisions, which are acceptable to all the members of the team. These teams are also found to brainstorm new ideas quickly, coordinate with all the functions smoothly, develop a goal-oriented strategic plan, and implement it with full commitment and energy levels. Therefore, these teams are known as smart teams. Whereas, the teams which are opposite to these characteristics are generally found to conduct unproductive meetings, end up with lot of conflicts and thus take longer time to arrive at decisions. The functioning of these teams develops a negative culture in the organization and hampers the achievement of vision and objectives of it. Active teams are generally found to be active in all aspects of their functioning resulting in reaching at a mutually acceptable and effective solution for every problem.
Research conducted by MIT found that active teams have some unique characteristics. These are,
- Active teams did not allow individual members to dominate. Instead, there were more equal contributions from members than in other teams.
- Active teams had more members who were able to understand each other amicably. Every member was able to understand the emotions of others through non-verbal communication and body language. For teams to function effectively, it is essential to understand each other very well.
- Also, generally it is found that active teams have more women as their team members. Women are found to be better in understanding non-verbal communication as per some studies.
Many studies are also done to identify whether any difference exists between teams working physically and online. However, the outcomes of these surveys found that there is no great difference between these two types of teams. The teams, which are active physically, were found to be active online too. The levels of communication, coordination and efforts for planning among the members of active teams were found to be good in online mode of working too. Surprisingly, even though the body language could not be correctly assessed through online mode of teamwork, the active teams were displaying the same performance. This may be due to their high levels of emotional intelligence (EI). When we have the opportunity to handpick team members, we can look for those who listen as much as they speak, express empathy, and remember what others tell them about themselves. For teams to which we are assigned, we can seek these attributes in others and help guide the team toward its best self. As for IQ? Here is the good news; recent research indicates that our membership in a team actually makes us decision makers as individuals!
