Accenture's Digital Consumer Tech Survey 2014 assessed consumers' acceptance about wearable technology across six countries. Leading industry experts and governmental organizations recognize that privacy risks and potential for using consumers' personal data without their consent are among the major shortcomings of the wearable devices. According to U.S. Federal Trade Commission chairwoman, "Connected devices that provide increased convenience and improve health services are also collecting, transmitting, storing, and often sharing vast amounts of consumer data, some of it highly personal, thereby creating a number of privacy risks." Another concern about wearable devices is electronic waste items. Numerous small electronic waste items could end-up in normal household waste and even more critically, problematic substances could end-up in the environment polluting water, soil, and air, and causing harm to human health.
