Week 1: Discussion - Is It a Project?
- An example of something that was considered a project from one of my coworkers that really wasn't a project would be when they were going through all our fleet vehicles and matching insurance policies to each of them. Making sure all vehicles have current policies and that we don't have any policies that are no longer needed (if the cars are sold). This was called a project; however, this is more of a routine maintenance event that happens once or twice a year to make sure all our policies are up to date and current.
- An example of what I thought was a project and wasn't exactly recognized as one was when I had prepared procedures for our operations staff on how to reconcile their month-end reports and then taking the time to train them in the processes of this new task. This is part of my job, so it wasn't exactly perceived as being a project, however I was given the task, I had a deadline to come up with the procedure on how to reconcile the reports each month, I had to have my procedures reviewed and then I had to train other employees on how to execute them. This example stands out because this was a new process created for a new group of people with a start date, deadline, problem solving and communication/presentation to a specific group of employees.
- If my manager assigned me a project and failed to differentiate it from my routine work this could cause challenges for me and my team such as creating a stressful environment, affecting our productivity or daily performance. Communication and clarification are key when being assigned to projects. If this was to happen, I'd make sure to ask for more clarification, I'd communicate our performance on a regular basis and ask for feedback or guidance when needed, I'd ask my manager for additional support from other employees if needed. Since some project could come up unexpectedly, I'd try to stay flexible and adapt to what is being asked of me and my team. I couldn't think of a situation when a project failed and led to missed opportunities or inefficiencies, but I did some research and found one- The Concorde supersonic passenger jet. This jet was developed in the 1960s to allow passengers to cross over the Atlantic in just a few hours. However, only 14 were made and placed in service before the line was retired in 2003 due to expensive due to high fuel consumption and maintenance needs and the jet only held 100 passengers, it was not competitive with larger jets. This failure teaches us that a project's scope needs to be balanced with its potential benefits. The project managers behind this project underestimated the cost and overestimated the cost passengers would have to pay for faster travel. Big goals without realistic assessments led this project to failure. (Tempo Team, Date Unknown).
- Course project- Replacing a house roof
- Pitch- I noticed that the shingles on the roof are starting to dry out and crumble. I also have noticed there are wet spots on a few different areas of the ceilings from what looks to be a possible leak, this could also mean there is mold growing in the attic space. Do you know if anyone has recently checked out the attic space to make sure there isn't any water leaking in? I will reach out and have someone look at this further and have them bring a moisture gauge so we can see if the dilapidated roof has led to any other damages, and I will also have someone measure the roof at the same time and give a quote for a replacement cost. If we get this roof replaced, we will not have to worry about any more water leakage or mold (people getting sick), wind blowing off dry crumbled shingles, structural damage, fire hazards, energy efficiency, pest infestations, etc. We can set a budget together and I will look at the different material costs available such as shingles or switching to steel to find what which would work best here and also find out what the warranty period of each would be. I will take on this project and walk you through the scope of it while keeping the communication lines always open- I will get an outline together with all the phases so we can get started. We want to keep this house in tip top shape and keep everyone safe and healthy.
