Hello class,
Over the years I have seen countless managers pull people aside and give them tasks related to cleaning up work that was overlooked or fell through the system. Although they were labeled "project", it was only completing work that should have already been finished. From a personal perspective, I think home remodeling, planning a garden, or even an anniversary dinner can be considered a project. Professionally a project could be deploying a new firewall or training a workforce on the importance of HIPAA compliance. All require a start and stop date, money to implement, and a certain end goal.
Fortunately I have not been put into the predicament of working on a non-project project. Projects should be clearly defined from the day to day work routines. Timelines for projects should be established with a deadline. Critical updates and patches are crucial to the security of an organization, if treated like routine work the outcome could result in a network failure. Without proper planning and risk analysis, rollback procedures may take longer leading to longer downtime for customers. One key takeaway would be that the improper distinction as it relates to cybersecurity could lead to overlooked Change management requirements and system failures.
I would like to complete a backyard shed by summer's end. This is a true project because it will require a timeline, budget, design, zoning, and HOA approval. A construction crew will be needed to build a frame and pour concrete based on my unique measurements.
