Title: Being a Big Sister
"Amanda, please help your sister with her math homework. I need to run some errands and get to the supermarket before it closes," Mom said as she grabbed the car keys and slipped on her coat.
"I do my own homework," Amanda complained, "so why can't Sylvia do hers by herself? It's just addition, so it can't be all that difficult."
"Addition can be quite challenging when you're a six-year-old. Help your sister," Mom insisted from the foyer as she headed out the door.
"I'd rather take a bath with a man-eating shark," Amanda said, ignoring her mother's order and her little sister's puppy-dog look as she went to her room and started texting her friends.
That evening, Mom was busy paying bills and asked not to be disturbed. Sylvia had changed into her pajamas and was brushing her teeth when Amanda pushed by her at the sink to grab a bottle of nail polish.
"Will you read me a story?" Sylvia asked, her mouth foamy with toothpaste.
"No, I'm busy," Amanda said, looking forward to painting her nails in a new way she had just seen in a video online.
"Why are you so mean to me?" Sylvia asked.
"I am not mean to you," Amanda argued. "That's just how big sisters are." As Amanda said this, an image of their oldest sister Tonya popped into her mind. Tonya was away at college, but back when she had lived at home, Tonya never had time for Amanda. Tonya had boyfriends and basketball games and secrets she shared only with her best friends who seemed as glamorous and mysterious as Tonya herself.
As if she was reading Amanda's mind, Sylvia asked, "Was Tonya like this to you?"
"Yes, she was," Amanda said thoughtfully, recalling the times she had pleaded with Tonya to show her how to put up her hair in a waterfall braid the same way Tonya had arranged her own, or to let her try on her high heels, or to help her with her math homework. Amanda felt a pang of melancholy. Amanda had idolized her big sister, and it had deeply hurt her feelings that Tonya had so little regard for her.
Sylvia had finished brushing her teeth and was looking up at Amanda with a troubled expression. "Are you okay?" she asked.
"I'm fine," Amanda answered truthfully. At least it wasn't too late for her to be a better big sister to Sylvia than Tonya had been to her. "What story do you want to read?"
