Recommendation Memo

Write a two-page memo (approximately 600-800 words) comparing two products or services and recommending one product or service over the other.

I. Header:

Follow memo formatting described in course resources (videos, textbook, etc.)

II. Introduction:

Define the topic and/or reason for writing (the Intros/Conclusions video)

III. Body:

Describe 3-4 important attributes of the products or services. Explain why the attributes are important and how they can help determine which product is a better choice. Compare the attributes. (Do NOT focus on cost as one of the attributes.) Example: when comparing two external hard drives one might compare the following attributes: storage/memory space, transfer speed, warranty, connection types.

For each attribute, you must triangulate data (i.e., use more than one trusted source for each attribute) and synthesize data (dont just copy facts/stats, but combine multiple sources into a new statement). You must use a variety of sources:

A product website (with stats/facts)

Professional product reviews (i.e., Consumer Reports, websites, videos featuring experts who have used the product)

Consumer reviews (i.e., user reviews from Amazon.com or some other site - use the overriding sentiment of the reviews with a few select quotes representing that sentiment)

Personal assessment (if you own or have tried the product, you can provide your own assessment as long as you compare and contrast your personal assessment to other sources)

Employ the following

Topic sentences for each paragraph (short, cohesive paragraphs) in the body section

Data/synthesis to support each topic sentence

Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.

Second-page header (see page 99 in our textbook)

Sections with descriptive subheads

At least 3 typographical devices for emphasis (e.g., bullet lists, bold, italic, etc.) NOTE: Use these devices sparingly to make important information stand out

Transitions between ideas/sentences (such as: In addition, Conversely, Similarly, First, etc.)

In-text citations as well as ethical summaries and quotations. For example, you might include sources in parentheses after a sentence OR write, According to Consumer Reports.com, the average as a way to informally site your information.

IV. Conclusion:

Give a sense of closure or summary

State which product you recommend

Briefly summarize the main benefits/reasons for your recommendation
