There are a number of key practical implications for managing and leading change in an ethical and sustainable way, based on the issues discussed in this chapter: 1. Provide clear ethical guidelines Staff need to be given clear, formal ethical guidelines, and training on how to apply the guidelines during transformations. They also need to be confident that they will not be penalized when making an ethical decision. 2. Ensure ethical principles are understood and applied An understanding and acceptance of ethical principles, including the organization's espoused core values and behaviours, in leading and managing change is vital. It is particularly important for each leader and manager involved in the change process to accept such responsibility in their own actions, methods, intentions and behaviours. 3. Address unethical behaviours If you have a corporate policy on values and behaviours, reiterate it clearly throughout a period of change and live up to it. Manage quickly and be seen to manage quickly any inappropriate behaviour that is not in line with corporate policy. 4. Identify the benefits of the change The key factors that will enable the benefits from change to be realized and sustained should be identified. This should be done early on in a transformation to ensure that the factors identified are measured and monitored throughout the transformation. 5. Acknowledge when the change becomes business as usual Do not go straight from one transformation to the next or people will stop seeing any benefit. Be clear when the change has ended so people get a sense that there is an end.
