Reference from the Book: Materials and the Environment (Appendix B)(VERY IMPORTANT)
Objective: The purpose of this homework is to assess the environmental impacts of a 330-ml single-use PET
water bottle consumed in Dubai. You will perform a simplified Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate
carbon emissions across its lifecycle and recommend strategies to enhance sustainable value.
Scenario: A popular bottled water brand, DxbPure, is widely consumed in Dubai. It is sold in 330-ml virgin
PET bottles with virgin High-Density Polyethylene (PE) caps. Each empty bottle weighs 18 g , and its cap
weighs 1 g . The bottles and caps are molded and filled with water sourced from the pristine springs of Hatta,
UAE. After bottling, they are transported 150 km to Dubai by a four-axle (32-tonne) truck. Once in Dubai,
the bottles are refrigerated for 4 days before being served in cafs across the city, significantly contributing
to the overall environmental impact. The bottles are cooled from a temperature of 30^(@)C to 4^(@)C and assume
that they occupy a space of 7cmxx7cmxx30cm in the fridge. With no structured environmental policies in
place, the empty bottles are often sent to waste disposal sites for incineration. For this analysis, assume the
power plant efficiency is 50%, and clearly specify any additional assumptions made.
Assignment Instructions:
a) Streamlined LCA Analysis & Uncaptured Value:
Calculate the carbon footprint of DxbPure water across the material, manufacturing, transport,
use, and disposal phases. Provide detailed calculations in your report, create a chart to visually
display the results.
Evaluate the same product using a streamlined LCA matrix. Make necessary assumptions and
include a brief analysis of how this method differs from the detailed calculations.
Based on your analysis of DxbPure water bottles, identify instances of value uncaptured (e.g.,
value surplus, missed, absence, or destroyed) across its lifecycle phases. Furthermore, propose
specific strategies to recover this value and improve the bottle's sustainability and overall
lifecycle performance.
Write a 3-5 page report summarizing the analysis described above.
