write as much as you can answering these questions based on the story of an hour by Kate Chopin.
What makes you who you are? How do you identify? Besides gender and race, do you identify by age, culture, political or religious affiliation? Do you identify as a sports person, a music lover, an animal or nature lover? Do you identify as a college student? a first-gen college student? Or an employer or employee or a business owner? Do you identify as a parent, sibling, wife, husband, partner, or child? Or a friend or member of your community? Do identify by city, state, nationality? There are many ways to think about your identity, and there is more to your identity than gender and race. However you identify, what message(s) does society send about your identities? Are there expectations or assumptions about your identities?
- Spend some time pre-writing (generating ideas) about how you identify. (See the first paragraph under "Questions to generate ideas for your essay" above for ideas, but there are more possibilities.)
- Keep in mind that Chopin's story will be used only as an example within your essay. Your focus, however, will be on you and your identities (see above directions under Prompt).
- It is important to remember that you are writing for an academic audience. Generally, for academic papers, you will write in 3rd person. However, for this paper, you will write in the first person. As you write, choose formal language, and review your paper carefully. Whenever you write or speak, knowing your audience is important. In our class, our audience is an academic audience, and our language should reflect that.
- You will list and describe 3 separate identities. Each of these identities will have a separate paragraph in which you will describe (see template below).
- Also, you will find at least 2 other sources to support your ideas on your identities. To find these sources, go to the LAHC library databases and begin your search for academic sources. (Using the first couple of sources from a generic internet search is not acceptable.)
