Note that the research paper required for this course is not a "book report". In other words, reading literature regarding the research question is only the first step in the generation of your research paper. Scholarly journals, books, and textbooks are excellent sources of information and viewpoints for specialized topics. Articles appearing in scholarly journals typically have undergone a rigorous peer-review process before being accepted for publication and are considered to have a high level of credibility. Various internet postings that do not provide evidence of a peer-review process or the support of a respected organization or institution often do not have a high level of credibility and are not appropriate references for this paper. In addition, consider the date of the reference material. Classic writings in a particular field may be relevant and valued for decades; however, the references for this paper must not be more than ten years old. Use APA format. An example of a reference list is given in the APA manual (you can find the manual on the MSU library website). Be aware that some search tools will claim to give you references in APA format, but they are not always accurate, so you must verify the format of your reference list with the APA manual. Even references within peer-reviewed papers, which were submitted as APA formatted manuscripts, might not be in APA format when published. The point is that you are submitting a manuscript in APA format, not a document that will be directly published. You must have a minimum of 8 scholarly (from peer-reviewed journals) references and 2 books/textbooks, for a minimum of 10 references. Choosing your references will minimally entail searching, finding, and skimming the papers that seem to support your research questions. The majority of these 10 references must be the references in the final submission of your paper. This doesnt mean you cant add or subtract some references in the final submission. For example, sometimes while outlining and/or writing a paper, you might discover other applicable papers are cited within the papers on your reference list. Sometimes you might realize some papers on your reference list dont contribute to supporting your research questions. The MSU library includes numerous databases and sources for a variety of scholarly journals that often allow PDF download of entire articles directly to your computer. One helpful resource can be located by going to the MSU librarys homepage at https://libraries.missouristate.edu/. I have also provided links to the tutorials for online library resources. You can select Articles and Databases to search scholarly journals. Academic Search Complete is a good resource. Their search menu has a tool option for you to limit your search to only articles from peer-reviewed journals. It is your responsibility to verify the references have been peer-reviewed. The library site also provides contact information for reference librarians by email or phone, who can be extremely helpful in finding specific information. If you run into a technical problem, you should contact the Help Desk at http://helpdesk.missouristate.edu. Google Scholar is another source for scholarly journals. It is up to you to consider the source and date of the reference material and determine if it is credible and appropriate. Professional websites are not considered a reference for this paper assignment unless it contains scholarly (peer-reviewed) literature. As references are read and studied, notes should be kept regarding information, methods, techniques, etc., which will be useful in the generation of the research paper. Notes are more condensed than entire books, book chapters, journal articles, etc., and should only contain information that is pertinent to the task you are performing. In addition, notes are written in your words. Copying and pasting from the material being read is not note-taking. The process of "explaining to yourself" what has been read is critical in mastering the material being studied.
